Welcome Andy

Please welcome Andy as our latest contributor. One of my biggest surprises when going to Evri was that there was a cycling community just like Medio, including a USCF racer, several dedicated commuters, and gonzo trail riders. And a DIY mechanic: Andy. Andy builds his own wheels, and we've had several great conversations about various arcana of bike technology. I understand he also competes in Alley Cat races. Anyway, Andy has moved on from Evri, but I hope to stay in touch with him through this blog, and I hope the rest of you get a chance to meet him.

North Bend Boy Wins Stage in ToC!

He used to be on Alan Schmitz's team before moving up to Garmin-Chipotle. Apparently humorless, but still! A reason to celebrate!

Going to Camp!

It's now only a couple of months til my next class at UBI in Ashland -- the 2 week steel brazing course, with the 2 day TIG welding seminar. And I'm getting excited! I've made my lodging reservations, I'll be buying airline tickets tomorrow, and I'll start looking into shipping a bike down.

Most exciting of all is that, for 2 weeks, I'll have a firm open window from 5PM to sunset (around 8PM at that time of year in Ashland), and good rural roads to ride on.

Yee-ha! I'll be designing a frameset & welding from 8:30-5, and riding from 5-8! That's my idea of a vacation! And I've been very good about saving up vacation time at work, so I won't have to take vacation in advance.

So, what do I pack? Actually, I'm thinking of bringing a portable stand and some bike tools. UBI closes their doors at 5:30 sharp, so there's no opportunity to use their facilities for personal bike maintenance. And, if I haven't given it away, my portable Minoura truing stand.

Siskiyou Velo Club publishes some of their rides on their website, and I can't wait!

Not Your Average Bike Racer

Thought you guys might especially appreciate today's New York Times story about Svein Tuft. I can easily imagine any of you guys cycling down through California towing a campsite and a dog,on a $40 beater bike.
